Research indicates family violence can be prevented. Understanding
the problem and how to deal with it is the key. Time Out is a ten-week
series designed to intervene in the cycle of domestic violence. It
is a non-threatening, non-judgmental, safety zone for venting fears
and angers. Participants come to the program by court referral, referral
from community agencies and organizations, as well as voluntary self-referral.
The classes take place in a group setting where participants receive
instruction, share common experiences, work together on problems and
learn to apply the skills they have learned.
Instructional topics include:
Current definitions of domestic violence
The criminal justice system response
to domestic violence
The cycle of abuse
The transmission of violence from
one generation to the next
Steps toward anger management
Conflict resolution
The effects of family violence on
children
The influence of drugs and alcohol
The program also
emphasizes the application of skills that are learned in the group
setting. There is a $150.00 fee per participant.
Following the completion of the group, referrals are made for clients
who wish to continue with the growth process. If a participant was
referred by the Court or Prosecutor a report of that participant’s
attendance, and the successful or unsuccessful completion of the
group is reported to the referring party.
